Deck Cleaning Services for Safer Outdoors

A 12x12 deck has 144 square feet of surface area, but pricing is based on more than size alone. Material type, railings and stairs, level of algae or mildew, accessibility, and whether the deck needs preparation for staining all affect the work required. A professional assessment should account for the full cleanable area and the safest cleaning method for the deck.

Pressure washing can be safe for a wood deck when the technician uses an appropriate pressure setting, nozzle, technique, and cleaning solution. Excessive pressure or holding the spray too close can scar wood fibers, create uneven marks, or force water into vulnerable areas. The deck’s age, condition, and species should be evaluated before cleaning, especially where boards are weathered or splintering.

Many composite decks can be cleaned with controlled pressure, but the manufacturer’s care guidance should always be considered. Composite boards may require gentler pressure and suitable detergents to remove mildew, pollen, and surface grime without affecting their finish. A professional can adjust the cleaning approach for capped composite, PVC, or other engineered decking materials and treat railings and trim appropriately.

Professional deck cleaning is designed to remove visible algae, mildew, mold-related staining, pollen, dirt, and other organic buildup. Cleaning solutions help address contaminants at the surface before a measured rinse removes residue. Results depend on the material, staining age, and deck condition, but routine cleaning is an effective way to improve appearance and reduce the slippery film that organic growth can create.

Most decks benefit from professional cleaning about once a year, often before peak outdoor-use season or before applying stain or sealant. Shaded areas, decks under trees, and surfaces exposed to frequent moisture may need attention sooner because pollen, leaves, algae, and mildew accumulate faster. Regular cleaning prevents buildup from becoming harder to remove and supports a longer-lasting exterior surface.

Moving furniture, planters, rugs, grills, and décor from the deck gives the cleaner access to the entire surface and helps protect your belongings. If an item cannot be moved, identify it before service so an appropriate plan can be made. Clearing the area also allows railings, stair treads, and spaces beneath furniture to receive a more complete, even cleaning.

Yes. Cleaning before staining or sealing removes dirt, pollen, mildew, grease, and loose debris that can interfere with finish adhesion and create an uneven appearance. After cleaning, the deck needs adequate drying time before a coating is applied. The required drying period varies with the material, weather, humidity, and product instructions, so moisture conditions should be checked before finishing.

A typical deck cleaning appointment can often be completed in a few hours, though timing varies with deck size, railings, stairs, buildup severity, accessibility, and the cleaning method needed. Larger or heavily weathered decks may require more detailed treatment. The deck may remain damp after service, so allow time for it to dry fully before replacing furniture, walking barefoot, or applying stain.
